Introduce Circumference and Area Formulas

  1. Review methods for finding and identifying the area of rectangles/parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, rhombi’s/kites and circles (including circumference for circles).
  2. Use real-world shapes and have students compute the area for these shapes.
  3. Students brainstorm on how circumference and area will be displayed in their presentations.

Tips and Tools

See Curriki for this video on perimeter and circumference. (1 minute)

Highlight Mathematical Practice 7, look for and make use of structure, on the Mathematical Practices Rubric.

If time permits, have students brainstorm real-world examples and compute their area. This is also an opportunity to tour the school and observe/measure.
